A Home Worth Saving

Rising from the waters of the Chesapeake Bay is a piece of overlooked history: Maryland’s Kent Island, one of America’s oldest English settlements.

Founded in 1631, Kent Island has endured centuries of struggle and survival. Yet, its story remains untold—overshadowed by places like Jamestown, Plymouth, and Roanoke.

Now, as unchecked development threatens to erase its legacy, Historic Kent Island, Inc. is here to protect what remains. Through discovery, restoration, investigation, and preservation, we’re working to protect the island’s stories for future generations before they fade forever.

Because Kent Island isn’t just the past—it’s a home worth saving.

The Birth of Historic Kent Island, Inc.

In 2020, our founder, J. Coursey Willis, began a simple yet profound journey with a video series called My Morning Walk. As he wandered through the hidden corners of his hometown, he uncovered stories of Kent Island’s rich and often overlooked history. The series struck a chord, sparking conversations and awakening a shared commitment to preserving the island’s heritage.

One conversation with co-founder Jennifer Barrick led to a bold idea: What if we could save Kent Island’s legacy for future generations?

By 2021, that idea became Historic Kent Island, Inc., an organization dedicated to discovering, restoring, investigating, and preserving the island’s history. We call it DRIP—a methodical approach to ensure that every step we take leaves a lasting impact.

Today, as the island faces the growing threat of unchecked development, our mission is more urgent than ever. We’re not just preserving history; we’re safeguarding the soul of one of America’s oldest English settlements.

Our goals are big, but we can’t reach them alone. We invite you to stand with us. Together, we can make sure Kent Island’s story endures for generations to come.
